Career Choices for Technical Drawing – What Are the Options?

If you seem to have a flair for technical drawing, there are many career opportunities that are open to you, which we outline in this short article. Technical drawing becomes a subject at around Year 9 and if your son/daughter enjoys tech drawing, here are a few career options they might like to consider.

  • Manufacturing – Prototype products must go through a complex process before the product is actually ready for manufacture and part of that is drawing the product, both in 2D and 3D. Ideally, a candidate would be proficient with 3D computer programs, as well as be able to use a tech drawing board.
  • Architect – If building fascinates you, why not train to be an architect? You would start as a trainee, working under the supervision of an experienced architect, while you would also learn how to build to scale 3D models for larger projects. • Electronics – Tech drawing – Even electrical products must first be drawn to precise specifications and if you are a good tech drawer, this could be the career for you! Imagine having to accurately depict the interior of a complex electrical appliance! There is absolutely no room for error in such a case.
  • Civil engineering – Major construction projects demand careful planning and one aspect of a civil engineering project is the tech drawing. Whether bridge building, a sports arena or a skyscraper. Major civil engineering projects could not be completed without tech drawing, so if you have a passion for large construction projects, this could be the career for you!
  • Surveyor – A surveyor needs to be able to draw effectively, usually geographical areas including boundaries; a surveyor would work with civil engineers, architects and construction crews. Click here to learn more about AWS training.
  • Landscape architect – A landscape architect draws geographical features, such as pleasure gardens, commercial building surrounds and state-owned parks; they have to work to the project specifications and the standard of drawing is very high. Landscape gardeners work with these drawings and if you love nature, this could be the career for you!
  • Technical drafting – A technical drafter can work in numerous sectors; manufacturing, electrical engineering, architecture and civil engineering. There are leading Australian companies that handle all aspects of drafting and once you are qualified, you could work for them.
  • Design – Machine learning is making great strides in the field of design, but that doesn’t mean humans are out of the loop. If you would like to get into design, start by Googling local companies that are looking for drafters.

If you are still at school, look at further education possibilities that incorporate tech drawing into the curriculum. Choosing the right degree course is an important step towards a career in technical drawing and your career guidance counsellor can help put you on the right track.
